DOWNTOWN GALLERY GUIDE: SUMMER GROUP SHOWS

Channeling the spirit of the season, summer is a time when galleries put on vibrant, experimental shows that often mix the old guard with the new. These group shows give artists the opportunity to express themselves, galleries the opportunity to show a range of artists, and collectors the opportunity to find works in a range of prices.

The Kids Are Alright at Timothy Taylor

The Kids Are Alright brings together by a powerhouse cohort of artists across generations, from canonical art historic figures like Louise Bourgeois, blue-chip favorites like Cecily Brown, to rising contemporary superstars like Erin M. Riley.

Surveying realities, dreams, and mythologies of childhood across mediums, this exhibition packs in a punch with work by Ann Agee, Diane Arbus, Michaël Borremans, Zoë Buckman, Dominic Chambers, R. Crumb, Madeline Donahue, Marcel Dzama, William Eggleston, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Titus Kaphar, Louise Lawler, Sherrie Levine, Sally Mann, Gordon Parks, and many others.

Hope is a dangerous thing at P.P.OW.

Featuring the work of Kyle Dunn, Raque Ford, Paul Kopkau, Diane Severin Nguyen, Kayode Ojo, Marianna Simnett, and Robin F. Williams, Hope is a dangerous thing connects new and recent artworks in their reverence for pop music, viewed through their thematic ties to the pop star Lana Del Rey in particular. Like Del Rey, these enchanting works reflect melodrama and camp, explore image-making and personae, and are at times glamorous and at others raw.

Superbloom at Arsenal Contemporary—with LA’s Night Gallery

Inaugurating Arsenal Contemporary’s collaboration with Night Gallery, one of LA’s exciting galleries whose program spotlights emerging talents and the art stars of tomorrow, Superbloom is a group exhibition marking the occasion of Night Gallery’s curatorial residency at Arsenal. With her signature world building that involves dark humor and high fashion, Samantha Rosenwald transforms The Hole’s Tribeca space into a dive bar filled with scenes of pinball, hotdogs, beer, and spirited liberation.
