Summer of Art in New York: Part I

Welcome to the ArtMuse Summer edition. Whether you are in New York the entire summer or just passing through, don’t miss the more relaxed and experimental atmosphere that dominates New York City galleries.  This is a time to mix and match, give a platform to up-and-coming emerging artists and invite artists not on the galleries’ rosters to join in thematic group shows.  Below is our selection of ten such terrific group shows to see this summer in New York.

Sean Kelly, New York

NXTHVN: Reclamation

Reclamation will be on view at Sean Kelly Gallery featuring works by artists from NXTHVN’s Cohort 04 Fellowship Program. The works in the show challenge the ideas of human experience through their different mediums of painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, installation, and performance. The exhibit investigates Western consumption and its ability to shape and manipulate beauty, art history, religion, spirituality, and sexuality. Each artist individually invites the viewer into their own perception of humanity and its influences from Western culture.

The beach is a beautiful place that is much more than a place for people to tan. While the beach to some is a place of relaxation and serenity, it is also a place of devastation and invasion. Simultaneously the beach is a boundary into the unknown world of the ocean, both a beautiful yet dangerous part of nature. Moynihan has created a dynamic 100 artist-show that highlights the different relationships and perceptions we have of the beach. Artists range from art history giants such as Eugene Delacroix and Henri Matisse to emerging talents of Asher Liftin and Dylan Hurwitz.
