New Kids on the Block

Adventuring - now for grownups, too!

By Alison Hogan and Nathalie Covo

The kids are heading back to the classroom. How about art class - for moms and dads - before you have to pick up the youngsters at the end of the school day? New York City mom and art historian Natasha Schlesinger, co-founder of the kids' museum discovery program, Museum Adventures!, is expanding her program to include classes for adults. Every of the week, on Wednesday and Friday mornings, Schlesinger will lead a lecture and discussion of current exhibitions and permanent collections in museums and galleries around town. This new facet of her business is called ARTDATE.

Two other new classes are also being offered; ARTDATE for Couples and ARTDATE for Singles; each will be a series of four classes over the course of four months ($240 for four classes). Schlesinger is an art historian and art consultant, specializing in the history of decorative arts. She was a specialist in European furniture at Christie's, and had her own consulting firm. Three years ago, she joined up with fellow mom, pediatrician Jennifer Ratner, to create Museum Adventures!- guided museum tours for ages 3-12.

The idea is to introduce children to the world of art in a fun and memorable way. Because at most locations, children are not allowed to touch displays, Schlesinger and Ratner bring along their own props and art projects. "I have a bag of tricks," says Schlesinger, adding that they tote theme-specific arts and crafts items to every class. "We entertain, we dress up, we do theater..we bring the art class to their space." They keep classes small, a maximum of 10 children. The program offers a drop-off option as well.
